The Little Doll

A little girl with a golden curl
A smile upon her face
Drawing was great, art to create
All in her perfect place
Then best of all, she got her first doll
A gift she could not replace
The doll clothes were nice, classic like spice
Trimmed in intricate lace

She loved the doll, it became her all
Playing throughout the day
The treasured gift of love, seemed sent from above
The gift she kept on display
As time does arrange, her behavior did change
Growing older as time will convey
In the box the doll went, no more time spent
“I’ll keep her forever!” she did say

The family did move, their life to improve
To a ranch with a running river
The doll went along, inside its box so strong
Valued like gold or silver
Her new life began, studying her plan
Her speech one day to deliver
But before all of that, fate came and sat
For a lesson it seemed to give her

The rain had begun, it was unsung
The water in the river ran high
The dam didn’t hold and they were told
Evacuate, stay safe and dry
The time wasn’t there, to choose or care
The thought wasn’t even of why
Grab it and run, the flood has begun
Her mother began to cry

The sun’s warmth did try, to make it all dry
The water was just everywhere
Check all your things, as the Robin still sings
She thought she could find it there
Lo and behold, the box to unfold
When opened, she could only just stare
The beautiful doll, the water did maul
Her tears the measure of care

Now all is gone, the end of this song
The memory is stuck in the cave
To hold would be nice, in spite of the strife
It is just how we learn to behave
The beauty to see, is how to believe
This memory so important to save
For me this best thought, the story the doll brought
Was the memory my beloved sister gave
